The residual effects of whiplash injury - Eye movement disorders
It has been found that visual disturbances are a regular occurrence after sustaining a whiplash injury. Most of these result in eye movement disorders which could include involuntary, rapid and repetitive movement of the eyes and double vision. Read more about signs and symptoms of whiplash injury.
A study was conducted by Van Nechel et al to establish the types of eye movement disorders most commonly suffered after a whiplash injury. The majority of participants selected had been involved in rear-end car collisions. Read more about common causes of whiplash injury.
Method
The participants were asked questions such as "does the disorder affect near or distance vision, or fixed or moving targets?"
They were also presented with a range of targets; a Nicolet light bar controlled by a computer at 10°, 20° and 30° to the right or left of a central fixation point. A succession of 40 stimulations was carried out in accordance with two paradigms:
The lateral target was switched on for one second after the extinction of the central fixation point
The target was switched on for 10 milliseconds after the disappearance of the central fixation point and then switched on again one second later for one second in the same position.
Results
73% of these whiplash sufferers complained of visual disorders with the most frequent being:
- impaired near-sight
- diplopia (double vision)
- oscillopsia (swinging vision)
- wrong distance evaluation
- intolerance to moving objects in the visual field
In fact, 21 out of 50 reported impaired near-sight and 20 complained of double vision. Further, 72% complained of headaches, one of the most common ongoing symptoms of a whiplash injury. Read more about diagnosis and prognosis of whiplash injury.
