Drunken doctor causes mum to suffer whiplash injury
A drunken doctor who caused serious personal injuries to a mother when his car
crashed after a high speed police chase has been jailed for 14 months.
Anna Cheung suffered a range of injuries, including whiplash, when Joydeep
Roy, a senior house officer at North Manchester General Hospital, crashed after
driving his Subaru Legacy at 90mph as police tried to pull him over.
Manchester Crown Court heard how the 26-year-old doctor crashed his car into a
taxi, pushing it 100 metres down the road before smashing into Mrs Cheung's
Honda Civic.
Mrs Cheung had to be cut from her vehicle and was taken to hospital with a
double fracture of the pelvis, smashed ribs and a whiplash injury. She is now
undergoing psychiatric treatment for the trauma suffered in the road accident.
Roy, who was previously been banned for 18 months for drink-driving in 2001,
was found to be more than twice over the legal drinking limit.
Judge Hamilton said, "Because of your senseless and reckless actions, not only
have you ruined the life of Mrs Cheung, but you have also put your own career in
jeopardy."
Roy was fortunate to escape the car crash without suffering any serious personal
injuries, including a whiplash injury.
The doctor was banned from driving for five years and ordered to take a re-test
after admitting drinking and driving with excess alcohol.
