Man makes personal injury claim for daughter's injuries

A widower whose daughter was left brain damaged following complications at birth is believed to have been awarded £3 million for his personal injury claim.

The man from Inverness-shire contacted personal injury solicitors and made a medical negligence claim against NHS Highland for the injuries his daughter sustained at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness in 1996.

His daughter, now ten years old, suffered brain injuries at birth after there were complications during labour; this led to an emergency caesarean being carried out on her mother, which also caused devastating injuries.

The girl's mother was starved of oxygen during the operation and sustained severe brain damage, which led to her death in July 2000.

The Scottish father was later awarded a six-figure sum in an out-of-court settlement for his wife's fatal injuries.

A spokesperson from NHS Highland commented on the latest case and said, "This case concerned a child who was born some years ago. Complications occurred during her birth, which resulted in her suffering a neurological disorder together with physical impairment.

"NHS Highland has accepted liability in this case. The negotiated settlement reflects the requirement for care."

The actual amount of the man's personal injury claim has not been confirmed but it has been reported that he could have received £3 million for his daughter's birth injury.
