Couple awarded £200,000 with help of personal injury solicitors
A couple whose house was ripped apart in a gas explosion have been awarded more than £200,000 for the accident that happened almost two years ago.
John and Alison Walker contacted personal injury solicitors after their house in Farrier's Rise, Shilbottle, near Alnwick, was severely damaged in an explosion caused by a faulty gas main.
Mr Walker, 60, escaped suffering serious personal injuries in the accident but Mrs Walker, 60, was rushed to hospital with burn injuries and is still receiving specialist treatment following numerous skin grafts.
The Health and Safety Executive carried out an investigation and discovered that a 40-year-old gas main had caused the explosion.
National Grid awarded the couple more than £200,000, which has enabled them to buy a new home in Green Lane, Morpeth.
Mr Walker said, "It has been a very difficult year and a half, but these things take time to be sorted out.
"We are just very happy and relieved that it has now all been sorted out, and that we have been able to find a new home."
The Walkers are still consulting personal injury solicitors and have made a compensation claim for the burns that Mrs Walker sustained in the explosion.
Mr Walker added, "My wife is still receiving treatment for the injuries she suffered, so, we won't be able to find out about the personal injury claim until that is finished - it could be as much as a year."
