Work accident in Ayrshire leads to severed finger
A Scottish kitchen salesperson lost a finger delivering leaflets in a work accident reported by the Sunday Mail this weekend.
The man was delivering his first leaflet when the letterbox snapped shut on his finger, severing the top third. He was able to drive himself to hospital despite the shock of the personal injury, leaving the fingertip in the Prestwick house.
The occupants of the house later found the fingertip, and called the police and the injured man's company to try to reunite him with his finger. Unfortunately the salesman's mobile phone was turned off as he was in the hospital, and when police traced him 90 minutes later it was too late to re-attach the finger.
Despite similar situations having led to personal injury solicitors and compensation claims, the man appears to be bearing his sufferings stoically. He said, "They say the skin will grow over it again. It's my left hand and I'm right handed so it could have been worse."
Looking back at the work accident, he added, "It was just one of those freak things. I don't hold any grudge - although I've heard plenty of finger jokes. I plan to be back at work on Monday but I don't think I'll ever have a career as a postman."
