Local residents' warning
Residents of a village in Derbyshire have warned council bosses to move some football goalposts or face legal action through compensation solicitors.
The compensation solicitor warning comes after a number of homes behind the football goalposts have been damaged by footballs hurtling at high-speed through residents' gardens and into their properties.
One 63-year-old man tells a typical story, he had only just spent £15,000 on a new Renault when a football strayed into his garden and broke its front windscreen as well as one of its wing mirrors, "It was very annoying. We often get footballs flying around here and gardens get damaged. It is disgraceful and we have been trying for a long time but no-one seems interested"
Another resident raised the prospect of taking action through compensation solicitors when he said of his damaged plot of runner beans, "Someone should be liable for this damage."
But it is not only for damage to property that compensation solicitors could be called in for. One woman spoke of the danger to residents and seemed to suggest that a time may come when local residents need to make personal injury claims.
She described how she felt after being hit by a football, "I felt dizzy and put my hand out to hold onto the fence."But I didn't fall to the floor, although I stood there not feeling too good. It hit me right on top of the spine. I was told if it had been a few inches down I could have been very badly damaged."
Another local summed up the general feeling, "The council needs to listen to these people and realise it could end up with claims for compensation."
