Baby killed by falling lamp post

A baby boy has died from a serious personal injury caused by a falling lamp post in a street in west London.

The baby, who was in his buggy at the time being pushed by his child minder, was hit in Chiswick on Tuesday as well as a 62-year-old woman who suffered a back injury.

Despite being taken to hospital by air ambulance, the boy died at the Royal London Hospital early on Thursday morning.

The lamp post fell over at the junction of Heathfield Terrace and Sutton Court Road and is now being investigated by police and the Health and Safety Executive.

A spokesperson for Hounslow Council said the death is "an awful tragedy". Refurbishment work is being carried out in the area for the Turnham Green traffic improvement scheme.

It has not yet been reported whether relatives of the baby are likely to make a compensation claim for their child's fatal personal injury.
