Road crash deaths at record low in the UK
Deaths and crashes causing personal injury on UK roads have fallen to a record low, according to official statistics just published.
An overall 14 per cent fall in fatalities has been recorded with 2,538 people killed compared to around 7,500 who died about 35 years ago when figures were at their highest.
A spokesman at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) said, "This new record low shows that the fall in road deaths is a trend, not a statistical blip."
Two reasons have led to the reduction in road traffic accident crashes that cause deaths, it is claimed:
- About 70 per cent of cars drove at more than 30mph a decade ago. Now, less than half exceed this speed.
- Traffic is now travelling less distance with a one per cent fall recorded by the latest figures, down to 4.1bn km.
Six per cent less accidents (170,500) caused some kind of personal injury with almost 25,500 causing serious injury or death.
