Parents make personal injury compensation claim

A girl suffering from cerebral palsy because of a serious birth injury has been awarded £5.75 million in compensation.

Laura Hegarty's parents made a personal injury compensation claim on behalf of their eight-year-old daughter for the brain damage she sustained during her birth in August 1998.

Laura was born at the St James's University Hospital in Leeds, West Yorkshire, but, because of medical negligence, sustained birth injuries which left her suffering from quadriplegic cerebral palsy.

At London's High Court, the judge commented on the parents' personal injury compensation claim and said, "As a parent myself, I find it humbling to read of their selfless dedication to her well-being."

A spokesperson for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust took the court proceedings as an opportunity to sincerely apologise for the "deficiencies in the care provided at the time of Laura's birth and to express its [the trust's] very deep regret for the injuries she has sustained."

Laura was awarded a total of £5.75 million in medical negligence compensation for her personal injury compensation claim.
