Hospitals pay £22m in clinical negligence compensation

New figures have revealed that more than £22 million in clinical negligence compensation has been paid out by hospitals in the North East of England, in just one year.

The £22,307,000 has been paid in damages to victims of hospital blunders and surgical errors who have pursued clinical negligence compensation.

The research has shown that Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which is the region's largest trust, has paid out the most money with payments totalling £7,116,000.

Figures have also shown up large payments from City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust which paid out just over £4 million, as well as the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust which paid out £3.5 million in medical negligence compensation.

Among the victims to have received compensation is a 43-year-old woman from Durham City who was left with severe injuries after hospital staff failed to detect a haemorrhage, as a result of this she was awarded £4 million in medical negligence compensation.
