Newcastle man makes claim for lost finger

A 42-year-old man from the North East is free to pursue a work accident compensation claim after he lost his wedding ring finger in an accident at work.

The engineering company he works for have already been fined £5,000 and told to pay £1,514 in costs after accepting, at Newcastle Magistrates Court, that they had not complied with health and safety regulations.

In 2005 the company also had to pay out a sum of work accident compensation following another worker sustaining work injuries after he fell through a roof.

The latest work injury occurred after the 42-year-old man, who works as a fettler, was using cutting machinery which was found not to have the safety casting correctly engaged. It was also found that workers had not received adequate training in how to maintain the machinery.

The Health and Safety Executive inspector at the hearing said that it was a "poor system of work that can be held directly responsible for the accident".

It is not known if the man will be pursuing his work accident compensation claim through the services of a no win no fee solicitor.
