Motorists taken to hospital with neck and head injuries

Two people have suffered neck and head injuries following a car crash on the M4 on Sunday afternoon.

A 51-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman were taken to hospital following a serious road traffic accident near Swindon at around 2pm on Sunday.

The pair were travelling in a black Mercedes when their vehicle collided with a Ford Focus on the westbound carriageway between Membury services and junction 15 at Swindon.

Sergeant Colin Conway, of Swindon's Northern Road Policing Unit, said, "After colliding in the carriageway both vehicles struck the hard shoulder causing the Focus to overturn and block a lane.

"The Mercedes came to a stop on the hard shoulder next to the Focus."

The car accident caused severe delays after police closed the motorway and carried out an immediate investigation into the crash.

The 51-year-old male driver was taken to hospital with head injuries while his passenger was treated at the Great Western Hospital for neck injuries.

The 18-year-old male driver of the Focus escaped the crash without sustaining any serious personal injuries.

Police are now appealing to witness of the vehicle accident to come forward with information.
