Accident prompts warning to riders from officials

Scottish police are warning quad bikers and motorcyclists about anti-social off-road riding after a motorbike accident on a towpath led to injuries requiring hospital treatment.

Many complaints are being received by police officers and councillors in the Highlands region of Scotland and they are promising a clampdown on the perceived menace.

Patrols by police are to be stepped up to act as a deterrent and legal and other action is threatened against riders who are on land without permission.

Of most concern to the authorities is the safety of riders as well as the general public who use public areas, paths and tracks.

A police spokesman said, "I would like to remind riders if your motorcycle is being used on a road or public place it requires to be covered by a policy of insurance.

"If you don't, you run the risk of being reported, your motorcycle being seized, and in the worst case, it thereafter being destroyed."

To avoid further quad bike or motorbike accidents, the spokesman warned riders to use their vehicles in a responsible and safe manner.
