Mother contacts personal injury solicitors after playground accident

A mother whose child ran into a pole in a school playground and broke his nose has welcomed a $75,000 compensation settlement.

Daryn Arel's mother contacted a personal injury solicitor after her son, a former pupil of William Pitkin Elementary School, Connecticut, suffered serious personal injuries in the accident, which occurred in September 2002.

Daryn, aged 9 at the time, was playing basketball when he ran into a metal pole in the playground, suffering a broken nose and damaged tooth, which later had to be replaced with an implant.

Town Corporation Counsel, Scott Chadwick, said the pole was being used for a game called 'funnel ball' on the other side of the playground.

He said, "Prior to this, it's been out there for many years, and this is the first time this happened, and it hasn't happened since then."

Personal injury solicitor, Stanley Falkenstein, said the pole should be removed from the area where pupils continue to play basketball.

He said, "Given the firm opinion of our expert and what happened to Daryn, to me its just common sense that it shouldn't have been there in the first place."

The accident compensation claim was initially made two years ago but has just been settled for $75,000.
