Multi million pound claim for medical negligence
A 14-year-old schoolgirl, who was left blind due to medical negligence, has received a seven-figure sum in compensation.
The girl had been seeing an eye specialist to fix a squint, but following surgery the girl's eyesight started to deteriorate. Despite not seeing the same consultant, the girl was prescribed eye drops but her vision continued to get worse.
The girl was eventually seen by another eye consultant, who discovered that her visual problems were down to a pituitary gland tumour, which was affecting her optic nerve.
Despite a successful emergency operation at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, which removed the tumour, the girl was left blind.
The mother of the girl launched a £10m compensation claim for medical negligence against the original specialist who failed to notice the tumour.
The claim for medical negligence was settled for an undisclosed sum before reaching the court room.
