Driver in cat litter fall awarded work accident compensation

A man has been awarded £4,000 in compensation after slipping on cat litter in a work accident.

The man who works as a lorry driver was delivering to a large store in Co Durham when the accident took place in January 2009.

The accident occurred when the man was unloading a delivery and slipped on some cardboard that was being used to cover spilled cat litter.

The cat litter had been spilled on the floor of the unloading area during another earlier delivery. The victim had attempted to clear the spillage but no brush could be found, instead a piece of cardboard was later placed over the cat litter.

The driver suffered severe personal injury to his knee and had to take strong painkillers to subdue the pain. It was later discovered that osteoarthritis had developed. It is believed that the accident which the man suffered accelerated the progression of the disease.

The driver launched a work accident claim against the store he was delivering to when the incident occurred. Before the case went to court the driver settled the claim for £4,000 compensation after the company admitted 80% liability.
