Climber makes accident claim for personal injuries
A man who was left paralysed from the neck down after falling from a climbing wall has made an accident claim against the activity centre where he sustained the personal injury.
The Gloucestershire man was visiting Fort Purbrook in Portsmouth with a group of friends when the devastating accident occurred in February 2002.
The no win no fee accident claim has been made against the trustees of Portsmouth Youth Activities Commission, who deny liability for the incident that took place at the Peter Ashley Activity Centre at Fort Purbrook.
In his compensation claim the man said that he was climbing the wall when he tried to jump across and grab a bar on a facing low-level wall.
Tragically, he lost his grip and fell five foot to the ground, suffering severe spinal cord injuries, which compensation solicitors believe could have been prevented if safety ropes had been used.
In London's High Court, the man's personal injury solicitor said, "A member of the public can walk off the street, pay the fee and climb to over four metres with no supervision and no prior assessment of what competence he has to do this."
The accident claim continues.
