Man makes compensation claim for mother's death
A man has been paid £10,000 in compensation after his mother was wrongly diagnosed with cancer.
Mark Dickinson, 38, from Chesterfield, made a compensation claim after his mother, who had been diagnosed with bone cancer, later died in hospital.
Janice Grace had already won a battle against breast cancer in 1992 and in 1996 was diagnosed with bone cancer at West Park Hospital after complaining of chest pains.
Janice was put on morphine for the pain but fell down the stairs at her home and was taken to Chesterfield Hospital with cracked ribs.
Whilst at hospital doctors gave her only a small amount of pain relief for her personal injuries because they said it was close to the end of her life. Three days later, Janice died from pneumonia.
A post-mortem examination discovered that there was not a single trace of cancer in Janice's body.
Her son consulted personal injury solicitors following the examination and made a compensation claim for medical negligence.
A spokesperson for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation said, "This was a tragic case and the trust wishes to express deepest sympathy and condolences to Mr Dickinson and Mrs Grace's family."
Mr Dickinson was awarded a total of £10,000 for his compensation claim.
