Road accident claims could be reduced in Peterborough

A new lollipop man in Peterborough could potentially reduce the number of possible road accident claims being made on a dangerous stretch of road.

Ron Vassallo has volunteered his time to help pupils at Norwood Primary School cross Gunthrope Road in the mornings safely.

The school's headteacher, Viv Evans, said, "We are really pleased someone has come forward. There is an ongoing problem with road safety. It is not just about speeding traffic we have to watch out for. There are also several bends which makes it particularly dangerous. There have been calls for a zebra crossing for a long time."

Parents have welcomed the schools new lollipop man but feel that more could be done to make the road safer and prevent their children from suffering possible personal injuries in vehicle accidents.

Debbie Todd's eight-year-old son has to cross the busy road on his way to school.

She said, "It is really good that we have this new lollipop man. The road is dangerous.

"Something needs to be done to make the road safer, such as the instillation of flashing signs which light up when people go above 30mph."

Road accident claims could be reduced in the future if traffic is slowing down for the new lollipop man but councillors are still calling for more action on improving the road's safety.

Councillor Bleakney said, "The road can be dangerous which is why I wrote to road safety officers. The best thing would be to get a crossing there, but this is certainly a start."
