Jockey wins £85,000 payout
A jockey whose career was ended by a broken leg has made a successful personal injury compensation claim for £85,000.
The Wiltshire-based jockey was working at a Marlborough yard when he was kicked by a horse, resulting in a severely fractured tibia. He underwent extensive surgery following the work accident but it soon became clear that he would never be able to race professionally again.
The 40-year-old, who has ridden competitively all over Europe, decided to consult a personal injury solicitor to make a no win no fee compensation claim against the owner of the yard where he had been employed when the accident at work occurred.
After £85,000 was awarded for the successful accident claim, the former jockey's personal injury solicitor said, "His settlement takes into account the fact that he has a permanent disability which means he can't continue with his chosen career. It also reflects the impact the injury has had on his likely future earnings.
"The law concerning animal accidents means that, luckily, he did not have to point the finger of blame at the trainer of the horse, who, in this case, was very generous following the accident."
The ex-jockey, who is now retraining to be a chef, spoke to journalists following the conclusion of the personal injury compensation claim and said, "My family and I have been through hell but now have some security for the future."
