Injured midwife wins compensation
A Derbyshire woman who was hit by a car whilst holidaying in Spain in 2001 has finally been awarded personal injury compensation.
The former midwife was using a pedestrian crossing in Malaga when a British driver jumped a red light and collided with her. The road accident caused the 63-year-old to suffer head injuries, a broken leg and a fractured shoulder.
She required extensive hospital treatment following the incident and also underwent a long course of physiotherapy. Such were the personal injuries sustained in the road accident, however, that she was forced to leave her job.
The South Normanton resident told of this decision, saying, "I had been working as a nurse and midwife for more than 40 years and had planned to work until I was 65. But I found that I was unable to fulfil my role properly because of the injuries I suffered and knew I could not carry on working.
The insurance company of the driver who caused the road accident initially refused to accept liability but, with a personal injury compensation claim due to begin at court in the next few weeks, decided to make a U-turn and offer damages.
The exact amount of injury compensation to be paid to the former midwife has not been revealed but it is believed to be a substantial five-figure sum.
