Hair dye company refuse girl's father injury compensation

A father has been refused injury compensation after his daughter was injured by an exploding bottle of hair dye.

Katie Sully, of Cemetery Road, Bridgend, bought a box of Clairol XLO Herbal Essence Cream Lightening Fearless Bleach to use on her brown hair, when the accident happened.

The A-Level student alleges that some of the hair dye mixture was leaking as she carried out a strand test and so decided to screw the top back onto the bottle.

Katie said, "It was fizzing out and then exploded in my face and went into my eyes. I had to run to the bathroom and wash it off - I thought I was going blind."

The 17-year-old was taken to Princess of Wales Hospital and treated for her personal injuries but the following day she suffered severe headaches and vomited throughout the night.

Her father, Mike Sully, decided to make a compensation claim for the accident and believes her migraine was connected to the hair dye explosion.

He said, "It's too much of a coincidence - she's never suffered from migraines before."

The hair dye's manufacturer Proctor and Gamble said the explosion occurred because Katie hadn't followed written instructions, which stated that the bottle should not be resealed once the solution had been mixed as the container may burst.

A spokesperson commented on the accident and said, "We are concerned to hear about Katie's accident and wish her all the best."

But Mr Sully is unhappy with this apology and believes Katie was extremely lucky not to have suffered burn injuries in the explosion.

"The warning should be much clearer. People need to be extra careful when using these products.

"It seems like the slightest mistake can cause devastation. The walls, carpet and curtains in our living room were absolutely plastered in bleach."

Proctor and Gamble have refused to pay Mr Sully for his injury compensation claim but have agreed to pay for a professional cleaner to clean their house.
