Cornish farm worker could make compensation claim

A farm worker may consider making a compensation claim after a metal spike used for picking up large bales tore through his leg.

Scott King, 29, was getting a bale of silage for the farm's cattle when the work accident happened at Four Lanes in Cornwall on Monday.

He was working at the front of the tractor when the vehicle suddenly rolled forward and caused a spike to puncture through one of his legs.

The spike, measuring two inches wide, pierced Mr King's skin but luckily missed hitting any bone or arteries.

The fire brigade were called to the accident at work scene and spent two hours cutting the farm worker free from the tractor using a saw to separate the spike.

Speaking from his hospital bed at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Mr King said, "While I was cutting the plastic off the bale I felt the spike going through the back of my leg and I was pinned there.

"The pain was horrendous. The fire brigade didn't have any equipment to cut through the spike so they had to borrow my angle grinder."

An investigation is now being launched into Mr King's near fatal accident and will be carried out by the Health and Safety Executive.

Mr King added, "I have used the silage spike hundreds of times before and nothing like this has ever happened."

In the future, Mr King may consider making a compensation claim for the personal injuries he sustained in the work accident.
