Family appeal amount awarded for compensation claim

The family of a man who was awarded £2.3 million for a birth injury has made an appeal in court for a higher sum of compensation.

The family of Andre Crofton, 26, of Littleton, Winchester, have taken their compensation claim to London's Court of Appeal after their son was awarded over £2 million for medical negligence.

In 1979, Andre was born with a severe heart problem at St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey and suffered brain damage after his treatment at the Royal Brompton Hospital was delayed by six weeks.

As a result of the brain injury, Andre, who has the mental age of a seven-year-old, can only walk short distances and talks in simple telegraphic-style sentences.

His family contacted a personal injury solicitor and made a compensation claim against the Royal Brompton Hospital for medical negligence.

But after being awarded £2.3 million, the family's solicitor said the level of compensation should be increased to pay for Andre's future care.

Their compensation claim is expected to last several days at the Court of Appeal.
