Electrician awarded compensation for crushed hand

A Welsh electrician whose hand was crushed in a work accident has been awarded personal injury compensation of £237,000.

The 56-year-old was installing machinery at Heathrow Airport when his hand became trapped, breaking bones and severely damaging the joints. He subsequently required surgery and has been unable to work since.

Justifying his personal injury compensation claim, the former electrician said, "The accident broke five bones. After it healed I couldn't move the last digit and the joints are swollen and deformed.

"Although the hand will work I cannot use it for more than a few minutes without pain. I have terrific problems with heat and cold."

The Mold resident revealed how the accident at work has affected other aspects of his life, leaving him unable to continue hobbies such as gardening and playing the organ.

Financially, the incident has also had an impact as the man's daughter had to postpone her wedding and he and his wife have been unable to go on holiday for three years. In addition, the couple had to try to find part-time jobs in order to pay the bills.

After winning his accident claim, the 56-year-old revealed how his personal injury compensation will be used to help him retrain and will also go towards replenishing the savings that he has used to live on since the August 2004 work accident.
