Paving stone prompts £50k personal injury claim

A Basingstoke man has launched a £50,000 personal injury claim against his local council after tripping over a paving slab.

The 43-year-old lost three toes and part of his right foot after the 2009 fall, and now has to attend a foot clinic for ongoing treatment.

He told reporters at the Mirror he had lodged several complaints about loose paving stones prior to the accident, but Hampshire County Council took no action.

The painter and decorator said the injury made it harder to do his job and left him dependant on his family for care. He described the five-figure compensation claim as "only fair".

"I was told I had sprained my ankle," he said. "But the next day I was in agony and I went back to hospital.

"I came out five weeks later minus three toes and a quarter of my right foot. It had become infected and the doctors said it had to be amputated.

"Now I can't work properly. It is only fair the council compensates me."

The council said it would be unable to comment on the man's personal injury claim for the duration of the case.
