NHS compensation costs you £15 per year

A new investigation, carried out by the Conservatives along with the Daily Express, has revealed the cost of compensation claims after NHS medical blunders. According to their research payouts currently cost each UK tax payer £15 per year.

Lengthy litigation has been blamed for the extent of costs surrounding personal injury claims made under no win, no fee agreements and Shadow Health Minister, Mark Simmonds, proposes an initial fact finding phase in compensation claims which he believes would help resolve many cases without the need for protracted litigation.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Health said that in most cases patients receive good care, however, "on the rare occasions… mistakes are made, it is right that… if appropriate, they receive financial compensation."

A spokesperson for YouClaim said, "Wherever a patient who has received personal injury as a result of sub-standard care it is always in their best interest to bring the award of damages to its swiftest conclusion so that they may afford the best treatment and facilities available."
