A victory for independence

A compensation solicitor has won £500,000 on behalf of a teenage girl who was brain damaged by surgery when she was a baby.

The award was made for medical negligence after Great Ormond Street Hospital admitted breach of duty to the girl's compensation solicitor.

The 16-year-old girl from Sussex will also receive compensation claim payouts of £23,000 a year for the rest of her life.

Speaking to the High Court, the girl's compensation solicitor said that the 1991 operation had left her with impaired mobility and coordination, as well as with cognitive difficulties.

He said that the compensation claim payout would help her be more independent in managing her own affairs.
