Engineer suffered injuries in accident at work

An industrial dry cleaning company have been fined £5,000 after a worker became trapped in one of the washing machines in a serious accident at work.

Raymond Bloomer, an engineer at Abby Glen, Nether Edge, was trying to clear a blockage in one of the washing machines when he became trapped inside.

The 42-year-old had climbed inside the machine's large chamber, containing hot water, and became tangled as he freed the blockage of laundry.

He remained pinned to the hot back wall of the machine for 20 minutes until a colleague managed to climb inside the chamber and untangle him.

Mr Bloomer was rushed to hospital and was treated for his workplace injuries. He was off work for a total of seven weeks while he recuperated.

At Sheffield Magistrates Court, the company pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations and causing the accident at work. Company bosses were fined £5,000 and ordered to pay £1,133 in costs.
