Young people in dramatic car accident simulation
Young people were cut free by fire-fighters in a dramatic car accident re-enactment designed to teach them about road safety.
In a carefully staged reconstruction, school children witnessed the scene of a head-on smash caused by a motorist using a mobile phone while driving - with make-up used to stage life-like injuries.
The realistic crash simulation was organised for year six pupils at a Yorkshire school by local police and fire-fighters.
A teacher said the reconstruction sent a powerful message to young people. And with young drivers causing most deaths on UK roads, a councillor who helped arrange the event said it was important for pupils to realise how dangerous cars can be.
As well as highlighting the risks of joyriding and road safety, the car accident reconstruction also demonstrated the importance of wearing a seat belt. One pupil had believed the safety devices were designed to stop youngsters moving about in vehicles.
