Best friends' compensation scam exposed
Two women from Manchester have been found guilty of making a fraudulent car crash claim in which they hoped to cheat their way to thousands of pounds of injury compensation.
The convicted pair are best friends and are 23- and 24-years-old, respectively. It is understood that they were motivated to make the car crash claim after a combination of debts to loan sharks and pregnancy put one of the friends under severe financial pressure.
Deciding to take a chance they contacted a "Mr Fixit" who said that he'd arrange the car accident; all the women would need to do was contact their insurance companies with details of their whiplash injuries.
However, they were found out just as the car crash claim was beginning to pay off when emails between the two were discovered by the 23-year-old's employer, The Probation Service. "Yo," said one, "he said there's no problem we're starting it all today. We only have to follow directions when they're given. There'll be three in your car, they'll be handled by different people so it looks right.'
The 24-year-old wrote back: 'I'm scared.' She was answered: "I'm scared too but it's sweet. All you'll be doing is driving off and then ringing the insurance."
Both the culprits were handed 12-week sentences, to be suspended for one-year.
