New European speed camera may cut car accidents

The well-known Gatso cameras seen along Britain's roads, which are designed to detect drivers exceeding speed limits and so reduce car accidents, might be replaced by a more efficient camera.

The EU authorities are testing a new super-speed camera, capable of recording five road traffic offences at once with the intention of further cutting road traffic accidents and resultant casualties.

Called the Multi-function Asset Camera (MAC), it is receiving its funding from the European Commission and shows great potential for being the Gatso camera replacement.

Not only does it easily capture speeding offences, it is able to detect drivers who are not wearing seatbelts, measure the distance between one vehicle and another in order to discourage tailgaters and pick out registration plates which belong to drivers with no insurance or tax disc.

The developers of the MAC hope to see it placed across the UK and the rest of Europe by 2013 and see reductions in car accident statistics.
