£8 million payout for car crash injuries
Personal injury compensation of £8 million has been awarded to man living in West Yorkshire who suffered severe spinal injuries in a November 2005 car accident.
The 27-year-old was awarded the car accident settlement at Newcastle Crown Court in recognition of the injuries he sustained while a passenger in a Peugeot 306 being driven by an uninsured woman motorist.
The claimant is now wheelchair-bound and will remain so for the duration of his life. His personal injury solicitor explained that his "life was changed forever in an instant... and he needs help with almost all aspects of daily life."
Agreement for the settlement was negotiated between the man's legal team and the Motor Insurers Bureau, and although a full, 100 percent compensation payout would have reached a figure above £10 million, the figure was reduced by 20% because the claimant was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the car accident.
In June 2006 the driver received a £200 fine for driving while uninsured, with a further £50 fine for driving with a defective tyre. Additionally, she received a six-point penalty on her license as a result of the car acccident.
