Compensation set to be awarded for icy road smash

A car accident compensation claim brought by a woman who was seriously injured when she skidded off the road is set to be awarded damages.

The woman was travelling along a West Sussex road on a school run with her son, when her car hit some ice and lost its grip.

She left the carriageway but was able to steer back on to the road. However, she drove on to an uneven verge that led to her swerving back off the road and smashing into a tree.

In a court hearing about the case, the uneven verge was described as several inches below road level. The case judge ruled that West Sussex County Council failed to properly maintain it.

While the woman was held partly responsible for her standard of driving in the road accident, the judge said the car would not have slewed the way it did if the verge had been maintained and was level.

A six or seven-figure damages award is expected by the woman's lawyers for the car accident compensation claim.
