Blackspot on the A92 claims another life
Calls for new safety measures at a notorious Scottish car accident blackspot have been renewed after the latest incident has claimed the life of a young man.
The stretch of road on the A92 between Montrose and Inverkeilor, known as the Big Tree Bends, has seen the introduction of several road safety measures since 1994, but now accident figures are increasing again.
The earliest measures consisted of warning signs and road texturing and this helped to cut the annual car accident rate from eight to three in 1995 and four in 1996.
In 2000, a skid-resistant surface was applied but the accident rate has risen steadily again. A total of 17 personal injury accidents have occurred at the spot between 2001 and 2004 and there have been three previous fatalities.
In the latest car accident the vehicle appeared to have cleared the bends, but then left the road and plunged down a bank into a gully. The 22-year-old passenger in the car succumbed in hospital to serious injuries including head trauma.
