Charities to benefit from brave woman's generosity
Asbestos compensation of £160,000 has been awarded to an 84-year-old woman who lost her daughter to the deadly asbestos-related disease mesothelioma.
Her daughter, who was 56 when she died, developed the illness after being exposed to the substance while working as a seamstress.
Speaking about her asbestos compensation award, the 84-year-old said, "I am pleased with the money but I won't spend it myself. I'm going to have some statues put on the gravestones of my family.
"I won't keep the money, I will give it all away to charities, my family and friends. My solicitor told me to keep some in case I need to go into a nursing home but if there's any good that can come from it by giving it away then I will."I have three main charities, the Salvation Army, the Red Cross and cats and dogs."
The personal injury solicitor who represented the bereaved mother's asbestos compensation case commented on the cruel tragedy of mesothelioma, saying, "It is a particularly aggressive cancer triggered to exposure with asbestos and fatal in almost all cases, killing the person within six to 18 months of diagnosis."No parent should have to bury their daughter and that's what asbestos has done to her child."
