Oldham Coliseum gets big investment
To prevent potential asbestos compensation claims, Oldham Council is removing asbestos from The Coliseum, the town's historic theatre.
Around £1.45m is being invested in the theatre to pay for a new heating system, the removal of the asbestos and the theatre's general upkeep.
The asbestos has been in the building since the 1960s and currently there is no risk of asbestos-related diseases to the public. However, it could be hazardous if it is not removed before work to the heating system commences.
Oldham council leader Howard Sykes said, "Even in this very challenging financial climate, we have found the cash to invest in this key asset."
The Coliseum has been entertaining its audiences since 1885 and it is hoped the latest investment will help keep it entertaining audiences for many years to come.
Removing the asbestos now will ensure that it is safe for the public and prevent any asbestos compensation claims.
