Bus accident claims leg, victim claims compensation

A Wembley pensioner who lost his leg after a double-decker bus accident has launched a High Court claim against the driver and operator involved.

The 88-year-old was left with severe foot injuries after being hit by the vehicle outside Harrow bus station in December 2010.

Doctors were unable to save the foot, and the decision was made to amputate the affected leg below the knee.

Described as healthy, mobile, and self-sufficient before the bus crash, he has become largely confined to his own home and reliant on family for his day-to-day needs.

"My daughter and son-in-law are as frustrated with this situation as I am," he told reporters at the Harrow Observer. "It has affected their lives as well as mine.

"Although we cannot change what has happened we feel life could be made a little easier for all of us if we were given some help and financial assistance so we could make the necessary home improvements and get some decent healthcare in place."

His personal injury solicitors have issued a civil claim for bus accident compensation in the High Court of Justice against both the driver and the bus company involved.

The driver, who faces a police charge of professional negligence, will attend his own trial in October.

The operator has refused to comment on either case, and would not reveal if its driver had been sacked since the bus accident.
