Equal pay dispute simmers
Unison, the UK's major public sector union, has accused a no win no fee solicitors firm of potentially wrecking the Agenda for Change new pay and grading system. The new system is designed to move female NHS workers' pay scales in line with those of their male colleagues.
However, a no win no fee solicitor, who is currently representing many of the women workers in a no win no fee claim against North Tyneside primary care trust, said that Agenda for Change had failed in many of its aims.
Speaking to The Financial Times, a spokesperson for Unison said, "It is a disgrace that 'no win no fee' solicitors should attempt to wreck a pay system that has resulted in 90% of women getting a better deal."
Speaking on behalf of the women workers, the no win no fee solicitor has condemned the Agenda for Pay measures as a 'complete farce', claiming many women will actually be worse off as a result of the changes.
