Payout for airport worker injured at Heathrow
More than £7000 has been paid to a UK airport employee for an accident claim he lodged after one of his fingers was crushed by an aeroplane door.
The employee suffered the personal injury when the door slammed on to his hand after it was caught by a gust of wind.
He was closing the door as part of his duties while working at Heathrow airport. He spent five months off work after the incident happened in 2007.
He contacted his trade union and when his employer, OCS Transport, was contacted about alleged health and safety lapses at his workplace, liability was admitted.
A lawyer acting for the airport worker said similar accidents had happened in the past and this one could have been avoided. Another worker should have been present to hold the door but his employer had not implemented the necessary safety action, said the solicitor.
The injured man suffered much pain and needed surgery to treat the crushed finger. A total of £7,200 was paid in compensation as a result of the accident claim.
