Mill workers' deafness claim

Industrial injury solicitors are set to help up to nine former paper mill workers from Lancashire mount deafness compensation claims, alleging that the men were exposed to excessive workplace noise.

It is understood that all those pursuing compensation have been diagnosed with industrial deafness or noise induced hearing loss following years spent working at a now defunct paper mill.

"Despite the problem of NIHL being known, proper protection very rarely seems to have been provided. What we are seeing now is the legacy of that lack of protection with people suffering varying degrees of hearing loss," commented the claimants' industrial injury solicitor

"Anyone who was employed in the industry from the early 1960s through to the 1990s and has suffered NIHL through no fault of their own will have a case for compensation against their former employer."

The industrial injury solicitor went on to say that anyone who has suffered hearing loss because of workplace noise, even if the exposure occurred 50 years ago, should consider the possibility of mounting a claim for damages.

She added, "People think that because the firm they worked for is no longer in existence, they cannot bring a claim.

"This is not true because, although the claim is brought against their former employer, it is the insurers of that company who would pay any compensation due."
