Personal injury solicitors can help you if you have been bitten by a dog

Personal injury solicitors help people who have been involved in all kinds of non-fault accidents. Dog bites are becoming more and more common and many people aren't aware that any dog can bite regardless of its normal temperament. A cute family pet can turn into a dangerous animal without warning. People are also bitten by dogs that belong to someone else, and those who work with dogs, such as police officers in the police dogs unit, have been known to suffer injury as the result of a dog biting them. In these cases, it may be possible to make a personal injury claim.

If you are bitten by a dog your first priority is your health. A dog bite can become infected and you can become infected with illnesses that the dog may be carrying.

You should clean the wound no matter how small it is. There are lots of bacteria in dogs' mouths which can cause an infection, and we would advise that seek medical advice in the event of any dog bite, no matter how small, particularly if the bite has broken the skin. However, if the wound is small then you may be able to clean it yourself with clean water ahead of visiting your GP or local A&E department.

Gaping wounds may need to be stitched, however a doctor may suggest leaving the wound open for a few days if it is more than six hours old. This ensures that the wound is not infected before it is closed up.

You may also need to take a course of antibiotics to beat infection. Your doctor will prescribe any drugs that they see appropriate.
