Pilot wins G-force compensation

An ex Royal Navy pilot has won £345,000 in work accident compensation in a case against the Ministry of Defence.

In 2000 the Chester man was flying in a Hawk, training for high speed flying, when an instructor spontaneously carried out a high G-force manoeuvre. As he was not prepared for the manoeuvre the man had his neck bent to read a map. He described feeling a popping sensation in his neck as the work injury occurred.

The 33-year-old persisted with his job for more than three years after the work accident, but in 2004 had to accept being classified as permanently unfit.

In making his work accident compensation claim ruling the judge said that prior to the work injury the claimant had been , "A very fit and active man.and there is nothing to indicate that he had a particular susceptibility [to neck injuries]".

The work accident compensation was awarded for the pain of his neck and spinal injuries, loss of enjoyment, loss of congenial employment, future losses, and miscellaneous expenses.
