Asbestosis and the modern world

Asbestosis isn't so much of a work accident as a terrible disease that can be developed as a result of exposure to harmful asbestos dust in the home and, most commonly, the workplace.

Asbestos is a mineral that is still mined today in South Africa, Australia, Russia, Canada and Turkey. Although there are now many health and safety concerns surrounding this mineral it is a useful resource for insulation and fire prevention, particularly in shipyards, construction sites, hospitals and schools, still favoured by many countries.

Used widely from the 19th century until the 1980s, there were three main types of asbestos: blue (croccidolite), brown (amosite) and white (chrysolite). The use of blue asbestos was banned in the UK back in 1965 and more stringent regulations were introduced in the 1970s. The main reason for this was that more and more cases of asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer associated with exposure to asbestos dust were being discovered.

However, banning use of such substances in modern construction was not enough to prevent the spread of disease. Exposure to asbestos dust for just a couple of minutes can be enough to cause scarring to the lungs and the onset of asbestosis. Equally, some people may be exposed to asbestos for as many as ten years in the home or place of work and not suffer any side effects; it depends very much on your susceptibility as an individual.

Many of those who develop asbestosis and the fatal cancer mesothelioma have not even been exposed to asbestos dust in any great quantity. Recent media reports have revealed that the wives and children of men who worked with asbestos products inhaled the harmful dust from the workmen's dirty work clothes and became ill years later.

Today, many personal injury compensation claims resulting from exposure to asbestos are made by grown up children on behalf of their parents who may be too ill to pick up the phone and give us a call. We have helped many asbestosis sufferers to gain compensation in this way.
