What should I do after a road accident?
If you have a road accident, you should:
- call the emergency services immediately if the road is blocked or you or anyone else has been injured, and retain any notes about your injuries that you are given when you are being treated
- get the insurance and personal details of all parties involved, as well as the registration number of the vehicles so that you can contact witnesses and the person at fault after the event
- if the road accident was a hit and run, or the other driver was uninsured, it is still possible for you to get compensation, so make sure to take the details of any witnesses
- try to sketch the scene or take photographs, and put down on paper an account of what happened as soon after the road accident as possible because it is easy to forget details that could turn out to be important
- start keeping a record of expenses and receipts, such as for transport costs and prescription costs, that have been incurred as a result of your road accident
- start keeping a diary detailing how your injury is affecting you on a day to day basis so that the appropriate amount of compensation can be negotiated
