Fine after fitter dies in work accident

The manager of a scrap metal yard was fined £50,000 after a fitter was sliced in half in a work accident. The fitter pressed the wrong button on a remote control which activated a car crusher. The emergency stop button was broken, and the crushing box closed in on him.

The manager admitted two Health and Safety at Work Act breaches and was fined £50,000 and ordered to pay £6,749 costs.

Nottingham Crown Court heard several workers, including the married fitter, had been entering the machine for several months without cutting off the power.

Deanna Heer, prosecuting, said:

"As he was working in the crushing box the machine was somehow activated. The wings of the box closed in on him and Mr Teece was cut in half completely.

"It is believed that he somehow activated the automatic cycle of the machine using the hand-held remote control unit.

"Once the automatic cycle had been activated Mr Teece would have had at most six seconds to react before the wings of the unit closed in on him."
