Asbestos compensation - company fined £2,000

Potential asbestos compensation claims could made following Textiles-manufacturer Nottingham Dyers Ltd being fined £2,000 by the government. A number of their employees were inadvertently exposed to asbestos when they removed a section of a partition wall in the factory, causing potential health problems.

The company has carried out no risk assessment, and no asbestos awareness training had been provided.

At the hearing in September 2004, Nottingham Dyers was fined £1,000 under the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations 2002. Paragraph 9 of the regulations requires employers to provide adequate information, instruction and training to those employees who are or are liable to be exposed to asbestos, so that they are aware of:

The firm was fined a further £1,000 under the Management Of Health And Safety At Work Regulations 1999 for failing to carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment.
