Car crash following abandonment
A car crash has been caused by an abandoned car at a level crossing in County Antrim. Police are treating the car crash incident, which took place near Dunloy on Monday, as attempted murder.
Neither the driver nor any of the 30 passengers onboard the Belfast to Coleraine train were injured and the train was not derailed.
Detective Inspector Nick McCaw said "this was a totally mindless and reckless act....if it hadn't been for the vigilance of the driver, lives could easily have been lost,".
"I am told by Northern Ireland Railways staff and the driver, that in fact if the heavy diesel engine on the train had not been at the front of the train as it was travelling, the train would have most probably derailed causing serious injuries and possibly even fatalities to some of the 30 passengers onboard."
Mr McCaw said the two men, who police believe left the car on the track, stood and watched as the car crash with the train.
"Police interviewed the driver after this and we have discovered that the two individuals, who we believe placed the car on the crossing, were standing at the crossing watching this car crash occur."
Police said two men were seen running away from the car, a maroon Vauxhall Astra registration NUI 6024, and have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
