Work accident - International Workers Memorial Day

Thousands of people across the UK are expected to join in a day of events to remember people killed in a work accident.

Dozens of memorial services, marches and vigils are being organised by trade unions and other organisations to mark International Workers Memorial Day.

Thursday's events, which include a memorial services at Ripon Cathedral and a rally in central London, are part of an international day of action.

The Health and Safety Executive, which also backs the memorial day, is holding a service at the church of St James Garlickhythe in the City of London.

'Preventable accidents'
The T&G union says 235 workers died in a work accident in the UK in 2004 - an increase of 4% on 2003 - with 30,000 suffering major injuries.

And the Amicus union estimates that five people a week die in the UK because of preventable work accidents.

T&G general secretary Tony Woodley said: "It is absolutely right that we mourn the dead and fight for the living at these events."

He added: "The draft bill is a chance to ensure that health and safety is taken more seriously in the boardroom, to ensure that workers' health is protected through a culture of prevention and that justice is done when tragedies do occur."
