One in every hundred road deaths caused by crashes involving police drivers

Brake is shocked to learn that thirty people were killed by police drivers last year, three times more than five years ago. The rise in fatal crashes means that nearly one in every hundred deaths on the road last year was caused by crashes involving police drivers.

Mary Williams OBE, Chief executive of Brake said: "We urge the police watchdog to launch an immediate inquiry into the disturbing rise in deaths involving police drivers. Police officers shouldn't risk people's lives in order to get other emergencies."

According to figures from the Home Office obtained by the Daily Express, 11 people were killed in crashes involving the police in 1999/2000, compared with 30 people in 2003/4. Last year the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) published new guidance on police pursuits.
